Concrete Sealers
Concrete Sealers
In one of our previous articles, we’ve discussed the importance and benefits of cross-linking polymers. Today, we’ll go over one of the unique applications of one of our cross-linking polymers–Concrete sealants.
In previous blog posts, we’ve so far covered anionic and cationic polymerization, as well as the benefits of polymers developed through these processes. In this article, we’re going to go over crosslinking resins and polymers.
Gellner’s Acrylic Resin for Concrete Sealers
Concrete sealers are applied to a variety of different concrete surfaces in order to protect these substrates from damage, corrosion, and staining. Exposed concrete surfaces tend to be found in environments that are harsh, or undergo regular stress–industrial environments such as warehouses, where people and vehicles constantly traverse the surface, and where chemicals, water, or other liquids are spilled on them. In these situations, concrete sealers are added to prolong the life of the concrete, improve its resistance to moisture and corrosion, and increase its durability even under harsh conditions.
Gellner’s cross-linking polymers are excellent additions for formulating primers and sealants that will be applied to concrete surfaces. Because of the unique cross-linking chains that these polymers form, they create a network that prevents water and other chemicals from reaching the substrate underneath. This dense network of interlinking polymer chains also imparts increased environmental, abrasion, and stain resistance to the primer or sealant formulated with our polymers.
One of our newer products, Ottopol 1320, is our main polymer used in concrete sealers. Ottopol 1320 is a medium-hard, tough, all anionic acrylic emulsion with outstanding chemical, abrasion and wear resistance. The built-in crosslinker of this particular product provides chemical resistance properties to products formulated with it that approach PUD performance.
Ottopol 1320 has many different applications. High quality cementitious sealers can readily be formulated with this cross-linking polymer due to its excellent resistance properties. Ottopol 1320 has good UV resistance and does not turn white or blush when immersed in water for extended periods of time. Thanks to its chemical properties, this polymer effectively retards efflorescence of cementitious articles.
These properties allow it to also be used in sealers of all types, for masonry, terrazzo substrates, roofing tiles, and other precast construction products. Ottopol 1320 can even be used as a binder in traffic paints and other similar exterior applications.
