Bringing Window Displays to Life with Polymer Chemistry
Gellner Industrial, LLC has developed acrylic polymers to serve a wide range of applications, some of them used throughout everyday life, like coatings and paints, and some for very unique purposes, like the one in today’s blog! From time to time, we are contracted to create polymer for more unique coatings and products, and one of the more interesting applications that we developed acrylic polymers for was an LED glass coating.
Turning Windows and other Glass Surfaces into Active Art
Glass coatings are a common application for acrylic polymers, though Gellner Industrial doesn’t often develop products specifically for them. However, we were contacted by a client who was in the process of developing a new type of LED display that could be used for hobby art, retail and advertising, and much more. The idea involved coating clear glass embedded with LEDs, allowing it to display a wide variety of shapes, colors, artworks, advertisements, and more–all of which were animated. These animated displays could be structured and programmed to virtually anything, from innovative artworks to retail advertisements to simple animated signs.
The project also involved the development of an optical coating that could be applied to clear glass, plastics, and films. Videos and images could then be projected onto the coated surface, offering a clear image with excellent quality and color. That included both animations and art, as well as real life videos–all could be projected with results akin to watching a movie. The coating showed superior adhesion to the substrates, and as well as amazing vibrancy and long-lasting resolution.
These glass coatings proved to be a fascinating and unique use of our polymer products, one that may come back in the future as LEDs continue to improve and advance.
